Depression

The cause of depression is still not known; however, depression has been linked to long-term factors such as traumatic life events, genetic, family history, personality, stress from a medical condition, and illicit substances.

Depression is different for everybody. There is mild and severe depression and it's often a combination of factors that can contribute to developing this kind of disorder.

The cause of depression can't always be identified, but recognizing the signs and symptoms early is important.

Signs and Symptoms

Depression affects how people feel about themselves. Some people experience intense feelings of sadness for long periods of time. These feelings can affect their behaviour, thoughts, feelings, and physical state.

Signs of behavioural change can be low concentration, regular intake of alcohol and drugs, being closed off from family and friends, and a decline in social activity.

The individual can elicit feelings of shame, guilt, sadness, frustration, disappointment, lack of interest and decreased confidence.

Negative thoughts will ruminate about fault and failure without new data to find a solution. The mind will get stuck on an endless, negative treadmill.

The physical body changes from weight loss or gain, headaches, sleep apnea, and tiredness.

The above signs and symptoms all contribute to long-term events and personal factors.
